Hemingway and Gellhorn, wife number three
In the 1940s Hemingway wrote, "For Whom the Bell Tolls" this novel was made for his third wife Martha Gellhorn which is also the wife that he left for Paulina. Both Hemingway and Martha were involved with the war, she was a war correspondent and he was a medic when he was younger. Hemingway and Gellhorn traveled to Spain together to witness the Spanish civil war, Gellhorn was much more involved in politics than Hemingway was which makes audience believe that she was a major role in "For Whom the Bells Tolls". The novel is also a love story between two characters Robert and Maria. Robert is an American citizen that is going into the war to fight for the republicans and Maria is a female who was raped by fascists and she lives in the camp with the other soldiers, Robert and Maria are immediately drawn to each other. Although Hemingway has written pieces of literature involving the war, this novel is much different the location alone where him and Martha spent time researching the men there and the rise of fascism. Hemingway did not enjoy when Martha would leave him to report the war because she would always be traveling. Hemingway however did want this novel to be for Martha, "His newest book is "For Whom the Bell Tolls," a novel of the Spanish civil war, published last month. It was dedicated to Martha Gellhorn" (Cheyenne). While being with Martha, Hemingway had connected her love for the war and politics to his creative story telling, which is why Martha was such a big influence on Hemingway's style of writing.
