When I first started the class and saw the syllabus online, I wasn't sure if I would actually enjoy the stories and poems that we were required to read but one of the first stories was "A&P" by John Updike and that was one of my favorite short stories I have ever read. The story wasn't only a good read but it helped me understand literary elements in better way. That was also many of the other short stories as well that I enjoyed reading. One of the biggest things I was surprised about this year was how much I would love poetry, when I first read "Ode on a Grecian Urn" I was very confused as to what the main idea or purpose of the poem was and after going over it in class, I left that day thinking how amazing it was to actually untie the knot and connect the authors interests to his actual talent of writing. I believe as a student I picked up more when reading the plays such as "Oedipus" and "A Dolls House" the reason being is because there was so much drama and it caused me to keep reading and become more and more interested.
When I started this semester in English 102 I was a little concerned about my writing and if I would hav enough material to make my essays something of value. After reading these stories and noticing how attention grabbing and effective these works of literature were. I have tried so much harder to fix my writing to prove a point and express how important the purpose of their writing is. When researching an author like Hemingway, he is such an inspiration to authors and is definitely someone that I tried to write like this year especially in most of my blog posts. Hemingway did such a fantastic job connecting his personal life to fictional pieces or even to explanations made in "A Moveable Feast" and that is something I tried to contribute.
